Roman waters, palms & the gateway to the south
In southwestern Tunisia, Gafsa sits at the meeting of oasis life and rugged inland landscapes. Known in antiquity as Capsa, the city gives its name to the prehistoric Capsian culture. Nearby El Ksar belongs to the wider Gafsa region; its story is distinct from the Roman pools in Gafsa itself.

Gafsa’s Roman pools are among its best-known landmarks: historic stone basins associated with the city’s spring waters. Their enduring presence connects the modern city with its ancient past.

Around Gafsa and El Ksar, palms, gardens and dry hills tell a different Tunisian story from the seaside. The region is also known for its phosphate basin and a long history of work and community life.
